Hip Replacement Procedures & Recalls
A Global Perspective

Overview of Geographic Dimensions

Hundreds of thousands of hip replacement procedures are carried out each year in many countries around the World.

By design, the information presented on this Site is general in nature, and I have attempted to cover each topic in such a way that it will be of broad relevance and value regardless of geographic location.

To help you get best value out of information presented, I thought it would be useful to highlight a few themes and caveats to keep in mind.

In particular, some elements of content within the Site are skewed towards certain countries on the basis that the broad logic, processes, ethics and standards that are applied in one industrialized and medically advanced society, can reasonably be mapped across to other equivalent countries.

That said, every country has its own medical capabilities, controls, regulations and legal frameworks, and you must manage your own health and legal position in the context of the frameworks that operate in your country.

So, I have taken out my metaphorical red pen, and no doubt in a rather clumsy, inaccurate and incomplete fashion, attempted to carve up the countries and regions of the World as set out below.

I have added a few lines to highlight where and how information presented on this Site is skewed either towards or away from these geographies, and my view (only the personal opinion of a layman) on the extent to which a broad 'read-across' to other countries or regions might be reasonable.

As I gain more insight over the coming months I will revisit and update this page.

Insights by Region or Country

United States (& Canada)

In very broad terms I estimate that c.60% of all content on hip-replacement-recall-help.com is consistent with the experiences and insights of hip replacement procedures carried out in either the United States or Canada.

In particular the estimated c.60% weighting applies to information presented on:

  • the high level, end-to-end hip implant recall process;
  • regulation and medical product (device) approval (FDA);
  • the legal framework, processes and controls;
  • general discussions of the laws relating to product liability, medical malpractice and more generally personal injury

UK & Western Europe

As stated elsewhere on this site I am currently a UK resident. My personal experience of hip replacement and the decisions I made for myself with respect to metal on metal hip implants were based on the guidance, information and care I received in the United Kingdom.

Based on the research and investigation I carried out through the course of managing my own hip replacement, my opinion, and I stress this is only my personal opinion, is that the medical, regulatory, legal and ethical standards applied in the UK are broadly comparable with those in the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan and mainland Europe.

I realize that this is a very broad brush, sweeping statement but my 'read-across' only relates to my assessment of the spirit of: ethics, standards, law and medical practice. Clearly as soon as you start to drill down into the specifics (legislation & hard standards) of how each aspect is managed in any one particular country or jurisdiction, differences in law, emphasis, practice, custom and procedure will soon become apparent.

Australia & Japan

I found that there is a reasonable amount of seemingly high quality information available in the public domain about hip replacement procedures carried out in Australia and Japan.

In line with my comments above for the UK and Europe my rough assessment is that approaches and standards in Australia and Japan are broadly aligned and comparable with the UK, mainland Europe, the United States and Canada.

India

At the time of writing I have very little insight into hip replacement procedures carried out in India. However, based on a very brief review of information available in the public domain it is clear that India has developed some very impressive capabilities in joint replacement and specifically hip replacement surgery.

I am very interested to find out more about practice and experience in India and as time allows over the coming months I plan to create some more content for this Site that is specific to India.

In the meantime, if you have experience of a hip replacement procedure in India and specifically hip replacement recall in India and would like to share your insights via this site I would be delighted to hear from you. Please use the contact form. Thanks.

Rest of the World

Including: South America, Africa, China, the Far East, the Middle East, Russia, Eastern Europe

As for India noted above, I do not have any specific experience of or insights in to the medical or legal arrangements in any of these geographies.

If you have experience of hip replacement procedures and specifically hip replacement recall in South America, Africa, China, the Far East, the Middle East, Russia or Eastern Europe and would like to share your insights via this site I would be delighted to hear from you. Please use the contact form. Thanks.

Summary

The overriding caveat that applies to all information presented on this Site is that you must do your own research with the help of your medical, legal and other advisers to understand fully the rules and standards that apply to your own unique situation in the context of the medical standards and legal framework in your country.
